1995 Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year

Sue Vardon

Retired (was chief executive of South Australia’s Department of Correctional Services at time of her award)

Sue Vardon AO, the inaugural Telstra Business Woman of the Year, recently retired after 23 years as Chief Executive of Commonwealth and State Government Agencies. Sue was the inaugural CE of Centrelink and as CE of the SA Department for Families and Communities was responsible for bringing together housing, disability, domiciliary care and family services. Sue is presently Chair of the International Year for Volunteers + 10 Consultative Committee, a member of Red Cross national and state Boards, Deputy Chair Australian Sponsorship for African Kids and a member of the Local Government Governance Panel. Educated as a social worker at the University of New South Wales and awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia, Sue has been an Adjunct professor at both Canberra University and the University of South Australia. Sue is restoring 10 acres of weeds to native bushland, having planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs and finds true contentment in spending time with her three grandchildren.
