ACT's top business women head to Awards finals

27 August 2010: A former Commanding Officer of the frigate HMAS Melbourne who is currently responsible for managing the Royal Australian Navy's fleet training exercises is among the finalists in the 2010 Telstra ACT Business Women's Awards.
Thirteen ACT business women, including a Librarian who leads a team of 140 that delivers library and research services for the Parliament of Australia, were named today as finalists for the Awards, now in their 16th year.
Other finalists include an ACT Health executive in the White Pages Community and Government Award category, who established the first public nurse-led, walk-in health centre in Australia that saw more than 1000 patients in its first month of operation in 2010.
A woman who conducts high-level security assessments of individuals for some of Australia's most security-conscious government organisations is one of the finalists for the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Award, while the marie claire Young Business Women's Award finalists include a marine scientist who is managing an aquaculture research project to develop Australia's octopus fisheries.
Telstra Chief Marketing Officer and Telstra Business Women's Awards Ambassador, Kate McKenzie, said today the ACT finalists were a diverse group of successful business women whose achievements provided inspiration for the careers of countless others.
"Telstra congratulates the 2010 finalists from ACT for the leadership, innovation and hard work they have displayed throughout their careers," Ms McKenzie said.
"Since 1995, the Telstra Business Women's Awards have celebrated the achievements of outstanding Australian business women.
"The finalists from the ACT this year join the tradition of women who have made significant contributions both across the ACT and within their local communities," Ms McKenzie said.
The winners of the 2010 Telstra ACT Business Women's Awards will be announced at a presentation luncheon on 21 September at the Hyatt Hotel Canberra, Federation Ballroom, Yarralumla.
Winners of the Awards will receive a share of $200,000 in cash and prizes and become part of an exclusive national business alumni.
The ACT winners will proceed to the national finals of the Telstra Business Women's Awards which will be announced in Melbourne on 11 November.
