Northern Territory's top business women head to Awards finals

23 Aug 2010

23 August 2010: An engineer project managing two of the Northern Territory's biggest road developments and a teacher-librarian who designed a school's strategy to improve literacy standards are among finalists in the 2010 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women's Awards.

Twelve Northern Territory women including business owners and leaders in the government and not-for-profit sectors were named today as finalists for the Awards that are being held for the sixteenth year.

In a sign that personal fitness is serious business in the NT, three owners of indoor and outdoor fitness enterprises - two in Darwin and one in Alice Springs - are among the finalists, including one who was injured in an accident at 28 and told that she would never run again.

Other finalists include owners of an Alice Springs pest control company and a Darwin jewellery store, an NT Correctional Services executive who led a government strategy to reduce anti-social behaviour and the St Vincent de Paul Society's CEO who oversees accommodation services for 300 needy people each night.

Telstra Chief Marketing Officer and Telstra Business Women's Awards Ambassador Kate McKenzie said today the Northern Territory finalists were a diverse group of successful business women whose achievements provided inspiration for the careers of countless others.

"Telstra congratulates the 2010 finalists from the Northern Territory for the leadership, innovation and hard work that they have displayed throughout their careers," Ms McKenzie said.

"Since 1995, the Telstra Business Women's Awards have celebrated the achievements of outstanding Australian business women.

"The finalists from the Northern Territory this year join the tradition of women who have made significant contributions across the Territory and within their local communities."

The winners of the 2010 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women's Awards will be announced at the Darwin Convention Centre on 14 September.

State Winners of the Awards will receive a share of $200,000 in cash and prizes and become part of an exclusive national business alumni.

They will proceed to the Telstra Australian Business Women's Awards which will be announced in Melbourne on 11 November.
