South Australia's top business women head to Awards finals

10 Sep 2010

10 September 2010:An internationally-recognised leader in optical fibre research and a woman who developed Adelaide's Chefs in the City program are among finalists in the 2010 Telstra South Australia Business Women's Awards.

Eighteen South Australian business women were named today as finalists for the Awards, now in their sixteenth year.

Professor Tanya Monro, founder and director of the University of Adelaide's Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing, which comprises dozens of physicists, chemists and biologists researching sensing technologies, is one of the finalists for the White Pages Community and Government Award.

Other finalists include Sally Neville, CEO of Restaurant and Catering South Australia, who devised a masterclass program to give apprentices the chance to learn cultural cuisine from experienced chefs, and Madge McGuire, director of Catherine House Inc, who climbed to Mount Everest Base Camp to raise funds for her organisation which provides accommodation for homeless women.

Kris Lloyd, head cheesemaker at Woodside Cheese Wrights, and Cassandra Zaina, an occupational health and musculoskeletal physiotherapist who is developing an online program to encourage screen-dependent primary school aged children to adopt good postural habits, are among finalists for the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Award.

Finalists from the health sector include Professor Debbie Kralik, head of strategy and research at the Royal District Nursing Service of SA, who developed an integrated community care program that resulted in a 51 per cent reduction in hospitalisation of older people.

Telstra Chief Marketing Officer and Telstra Business Women's Awards Ambassador, Kate McKenzie, said today the South Australian finalists were a diverse group of successful business women whose achievements provided inspiration for the careers of countless others.

"Telstra congratulates the 2010 finalists from South Australian for the leadership, innovation and hard work they have displayed throughout their careers," Ms McKenzie said.

"Since 1995, the Telstra Business Women's Awards have celebrated the achievements of outstanding Australian business women.

"The finalists from South Australian this year join the tradition of women who have made significant contributions both across the State and within their local communities," Ms McKenzie said.

The winners of the 2010 Telstra South Australian Business Women's Awards will be announced at a presentation luncheon on 8 October at the Hilton Adelaide Grand Ballroom, Victoria Square, Adelaide.

Winners of the Awards will receive a share of $200,000 in cash and prizes and become part of an exclusive national business alumni.
