Top Territory women named finalists for Business Women’s Awards

A third generation Territorian who is the NT Deputy Coroner and the general manager of Alice Springs and Tennant Creek airports are among 14 remarkable women named today as finalists for the 2012 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women’s Awards.

Kathryn Ganley, one of the first graduates of the Northern Territory University, has delivered 850 coronial findings for the Office of the Coroner in the Department of Justice and is a member of the Child Deaths Review and Prevention Committee.

She is among four finalists for the White Pages Community and Government Award along with Nancy Jeffrey of the Save The Children Australia initiative, Lesley Monro of Riding for the Disabled in the Top End Inc and Jackie Plunkett, Director of Strategic eHealth Projects for the NT Department of Health.

Katie Cooper forged a successful management career for Air New Zealand in  Melbourne and Auckland before taking on her current role in 2010. She’s faced challenges from the strong Australian dollar and post-GFC tourism by diversifying  Alice Springs Airport’s income through property developments, leasing land for aircraft storage, and building both a new hangar and a solar power station to  supply the airport’s internal grid.

Ms Cooper is one of three finalists for the Hudson Private and Corporate Sector Award along with Karen Relph, one of the driving forces behind the Coolalinga Community Bank in Darwin’s outer rural area, and Katrina Chin, Business Banking Manager for the National Australia Bank in Darwin.

Other 2012 finalists include business owners Teresa Betts, of Nhulunbuy’s New  Look Beauty Salon & Selections Boutique, and Donna Johnson of Totally WorkWear Palmerston.

Kate McKenzie, Group Managing Director Telstra Innovation, Products & Marketing and Ambassador of the Telstra Business Women’s Awards, said the Awards were a celebration of the enormous diversity of amazing business women in the Northern Territory.

“For 18 years, the Awards have shone a spotlight on the achievements of inspirational women. In 2012, the 12 Territory finalists range from women who  have shown courage and determination to start and grow their own businesses to others who are influential leaders in local business and community sectors. The innovation in ideas and technology that they reveal is vital to the future of the Territory’s economy,” Ms McKenzie said.

Mark Steyn, CEO of Hudson Australia/New Zealand said: “As sponsor of the Private & Corporate Sector Award, Hudson is passionate about profiling successful women in business and recognising the hugely valuable contribution they continue to make to corporate and community life. It is a privilege to be associated with an event  that showcases the excellent calibre and quality of talented women working in the Northern Territory and across Australia. We are also proud to promote the  opportunities available to high performing women.”

Winners of the 2012 Telstra Northern Territory Business Women’s Awards will be announced at a gala luncheon on Tuesday 9 October in Darwin.
